MOSTAFA FARUQUE MOHAMMED
Mostafa Faruque Mohammed, a retired secretary and ambassador is a celebrity of the district of Jessore. He was born in the village of Krishnanagar in the Jhhikargachcha upazilla in Jessore district. His father late Sekander Mohammad Moslem was a muktar and later became an advocate of Jessore district court. His mother late Amena Khatun was a well known lady in the locality. Mostafa Farouque is the third among eight children of his parents and he is the second among his brothers Mostafa Anwar Mohammad, his elder brother was a Joint secretary of the Government. He died in 1994.in the United States of America. His another brother Mostafa Maruf Mohammad died in 2003. His youngest brother Mostafa Sharif Mohammad is presently working as a child specialist at Holy Family Red Crescent Hospital in Dhaka. His eldest sister Rownak a Noor was the Jessore District Education Officer. His another sister Rahmata Noor was a teacher. Rashida Noor, his another sister was a BA, BEd. His youngest sister Rowshana Noor is a social worker.
Academic life:
Mostafa Faruque Mohammed began his education at the village pathshala. He read upto class two there .He got himself admitted at Jhikargachcha High School in 1950 in class Four without studying in class three. He passed the Matriculation Examination in 1956 from there. He had a brilliant result in the Matriculation examination. He stood ninth in the then East Pakistan and secured the highest marks in Bangla. He passed the IA from Jessore Michael Modhusudan College in 1958 securing third position under Rajshahi University. While a student of IA class he was elected Cultural secretary of the college students union. He got himself admitted in the Department of Economics in Dhaka University in 1958. Career:
Mostafa Faruque started his career through teaching in Dhaka University in 1963. But he did not serve there for long. In 1964 he went to England for higher studies obtaining Commonwealth Scholarship. He appeared at the CSS examination from London. He passed the examination and joined erstwhile Pakistan Foreign Service. He was appointed Third Secretary at the Pakistan Embassy in Japan in 1968. In 1970 he was promoted as Second Secretary .He was upset with the beginning of Liberation War in 1971.During the period of war he was transferred from Japan to the Philippines. Within a span of a month time he was again transferred to Indonesia. Faruque Mohammed floated an organization namely ‘Amora’ with the Bangladeshis there and worked secretly. He played an important role in mobilizing public opinion in Indonesia in favour of Bangladesh.. He was made unofficial chief of Bangladesh mission in Jakarta in December 1971. Indonesia recognized Bangladesh in February 1972.At that time he established Bangladesh Embassy there by the order of the then Foreign Minister, Late Abdus Samad Azad.. The Bangladeshis living in Indonesia were harassed by the Pakistanis. In the beginning of Bangladesh Liberation War in 1971 Indonesain Muslims were supporting Pakistan. Wide and painstaking publicity in favour of Bangladesh during the war of liberation by Amora Group under the stewardship of Mostafa Faruque was instrumental to reverse the anti-Bangladesh feelings of the local people and that was one of the reasons for the later day support of Indonesia for Bangladesh and for this, the role of Mostafa Faruque was highly praiseworthy.
He came back home in 1973 and was entrusted with appointed a Director in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the Middle East and Africa Directorate . At that time Israelis and the Arabs were at war. At the initiative of Mostafa Faruque, one hundred thousand kilogrammes of tea was sent to Egypt, in wahr was later known as the Tea-diplomacy that went a long way to promote formal recognition of Bangladesh by the Arab countries. . and strengthened diplomatic relationship between Bangladesh and Middle East countries.
In 1974, Mostafa Faruque Mohammed was appointed Director if the South Asian Directorate. He kept himself engaged in supervising welfare of the Bangladeshis who came back to their homeland from Pakistan via Afghanistan and India. He was very much involved in the very initial stage of developing ties between Bangladesh and India. Faruque Mohammed had some contributions also in the signing of Land Boundary agreement between Bangladesh and India. He was involved in the preliminary work on the border agreement signed by Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and the Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. He was assigned with the responsibility of the Director of Foreign Secretary’s office in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs after the assassination of Bangabandhu on 15th August.1975. He was transferred to Bangladesh Mission in New York in 1976. He joined there as First Secretary and later was promoted as Counselor. During his tenure there in 1978 Bangladesh had to fight with Japan for the election as the member of United Nations Security Council. Bangladesh won and was elected member of the United Nations Security Council for the first time by defeating Japan. Mostafa Faruque was made the alternate representative of Bangladesh in the Security Council in 1979. He was appointed as the Deputy High Commissioner in New Delhi, India the same year. He returned home in November 1981. In 1982 he was transferred to Bangladesh Embassy in Egypt as Minister Plenipotentiary.
On his return from Cairo in 1986 Mostafa Faruque worked as the Head of South Asian desk in the Ministry of Foreign affairs. He also served as the SAARC Director General. He worked there till 1990 and he was appointed the Ambassador to Myanmar in May the same year. He joined as the Ambassador in Bangladesh Embassy in Vietnam in 1993. This Embassy was established by him. He served as the Ambassador in Russia during 1996-99 and as then as High Commissioner in India till end of 2001. He served once as the Deputy High Commissioner and again as the High Commissioner in India. Mostafa Faruque Mohammed is the only diplomat in Bangladesh who served as the ambassador and Head of Mission in both our two neighboring countries- India and Myanmar.
He retired from government service in 2001. After his retirement, the then Awami League government appointed him on contractual basis which was terminated by the Government that followed. He has since been in Bangladesh and enjoying his retirement .
Mostafa Faruque Mohammed married Momtaz Habib of Kushtia in 1968. The couple had two daughters, hRidi and Disha Sonata.
Poetic genius:
He was involved in writing since his boyhood. He mainly began his writing through poetry. His first poem was published in the Kishore Majlish page of the daily Sattyajug published from Kolkata in 1953. He was delighted to find his name beneath the poem. Later on a good number of his poems were published in a number of newspapers and periodicals in phases. He used to write occasionally in the page Sabujpata in the daily Lokshebok. In 1955 he was awarded a certificate as the best child littérateur on behalf of the Sabuj pata. Another newspaper there arranged a poetry competition for the school students of two Bengals. He became second in that competition. He got books worth of Rs. 25 as the prize. Since then he kept himself engaged in writing. A good number of his poems and articles has been published in the Ittefaq and the Prothom Alo. Presently ,he writes essays and occasional poems. He became popular for writing on the issues of the development activities which he observed in Myanmar ,Vietnam, Egypt, Japan during the period of his stay there and the experiences in different newspapers and periodicals. He has tried to depict through his writings the similarity of today’s Bangladesh with the Myanmar, what is the position of Bangladesh compared to that, how Russia is being split and the cause of its split and how the war ravaged Vietnam marched forward. The people of our country can learn a lot through his writings.
Patriotism:
Mostafa Faruque Mohammed loves his country dearly. His love is revealed in his behaviour and words. His efforts are on to set up a stadium in his place of birth Jhikargachcha in Jessore. But it is yet to become a reality due to lack of willingness of the local people. He thinks there are a lot of talented players like cricketer Syed Russell, but due to lack of necessary playground and training they are unable to flourish themselves .It is very much possible to establish Jhikargacha as the sports capital of Bangladesh by establishing a stadium as well as by providing various other facilities.
While commenting on the Jessore website he said “We are closely involved with Jessore. Jessore is our life, Jessore is our death. The identity of Jessore is our identity. I want to find Jessore website in such a way that when we open it ,we can think that we are in Jessore.
Faruque Mohammed is a patron of the Jessore website.
Personal Life:
Mostafa Faruque Mohammed married Mamtaj Habib from Kushtia in 1968. His wife passed B.A with Honours from and MA from Rajshahi University and later she did M.A in Social Welfare and Research from Dhaka University. She is a social worker and a house wife. He is blessed with two daughters. The elder daughter Hridi is now the resident of Oxford and the younger daughter Disha Sonata is a project coordinator in the International Organization for Migration, IOM. in Dhaka.
Following a cardiac arrest in 2003, Faruque Mohammed is now leading a restricted life. He was invited to join the politics of Bangladesh Awami League.
Presently, he lives in a flat in a Gulshan -1 with the members of his family happily.
